This form of exercise is actually named after Joseph Pilates. In the early
1900’s, suffering from rickets, asthma and rheumatic fever, Joseph created a
series of exercises to help combat all of those setbacks. He taught many
of these exercises over the years. Later, during World War I, he began
working with non-ambulatory patients.
To help support their movement, Joseph attached the bed springs to the hospital beds. Doctors noticed the army medical patients regaining their health much faster. These spring based exercises became the bases for the specialized equipment originally designed by Pilates and is still used today!
